I was relieved to find that Jasper had made himself scarce when I returned to my apartment. His room was empty, and I didn’t bother calling his phone to ask where he had gone. I was more concerned about warning Alexander that things had not gone according to plan with the coven. I hadn’t told him my intentions of explaining his position, but now I wish I had. He likely would have talked me out of it.

“Has something occurred?”

I exhaled, relief flooding me at the sound of his voice. He’d come. Of course he had. He wasn’t ever going to leave me holding the bag on my own.

He wasn’t Nick.

I spun around and immediately threw my arms around him, relishing the feel of his arms around my waist.

“What is it, my love?” Alexander whispered, drawing my head back to stare worriedly into my eyes. “What has happened?”

“I went to the coven, to the Sisters,” I blubbered, all the words spilling over one another to escape my mouth. “I wanted them to know that they were wrong about you, that Calliope was the bad one. They couldn’t see what I can see in you!”

Alexander’s face twisted, and he released me, shaking his head.

“Was Calliope among them?” he asked worriedly.

I shook my head. “Of course not.”

He turned away and began to pace the living room, wringing his hands.

“I wish you had not done that without discussing this with me beforehand, Ali,” he muttered. I could almost see the wheels of his brain turning as he moved. “What did they say in response?”

“They didn’t believe me.”

“No, of course they would not. They have been entranced by Calliope’s charisma and tale of dark wickedness,” he remarked bitterly. “They have no reason to believe that she could be capable of such treachery.”

I inhaled and stalked toward him, reaching for his hands.

“To be fair, Alexander, you are the one who unleashed the Shadows on us,” I reminded him gently. “They have a right to be afraid.”

“I would not have had to resort to such extreme measures had she not started this war between us!” he insisted.

“I understand that, but we need to make them see it, too.”

My cell started to ring from my purse, but I ignored it, clinging to Alexander’s hands, imploring him to look at me.

“My friends are not your enemies,” I told him, concern twining through my chest. “They are scared for themselves and their families. You have to convince them that you’re not here for them.”

Alexander scoffed lightly but didn’t pull away.

“Do you believe that they will merely permit me to terminate my sister without interference?” he asked.

I tensed. “I won’t, either,” I said firmly. “Calliope doesn’t need to be harmed—”

“She does, Alison! Have you heard nothing of what I told you? As long as she lives, you will not be safe. If she has not discovered you are Aurelia, she soon will.”

He froze.

“Did you tell the coven?” he breathed, his ethereal eyes widening.

“What?”

“Did you enlighten the coven as to your true identity?”

“I…I may have said something about it,” I sputtered.
